Slinger, Wis., July 19-Dennis Prunty and Steve Apel have been the story all season at the Slinger Super Speedway and Sunday night was no exception as they added yet another chapter to their battles with Prunty scoring the victory in the Pomp’s Tire 60-lap super late model feature after aggressively taking the lead from Apel with less than five laps to go.
“I know I touched him a little bit but we were racing hard for the win,” Prunty stated from victory lane afterwards describing the winning pass that rooted Apel out of the inside lane, “I love racing with Steve (Apel).”
“I’m disappointed because we came here to win,” Apel said following his second place finish after leading for most of the race, “when it’s this hot it’s hard, the tires get hot really quick and things start to go away. That’s twice now Dennis (Prunty) has passed me at the end.”
Rob Braun and Steve Apel led the field to the green flag and Apel eventually prevailed from the outside lane after several laps of side by side racing. Braun found himself in a battle for second with Conrad Morgan, John DeAngelis, and Tim Lampmann as Apel began to ease away slightly. The inside lane proved to be the quick way in the early going and DeAngelis, Morgan, Dan Church, and Dennis Prunty all used it to advance as Braun and Lampman fell back on the high side. Morgan than worked his way in to the inside of DeAngelis to take over second while Church filled the inside gap and raced door to door with DeAngelis for third while the leader Apel and second place Morgan drew farther ahead. This time it was DeAngelis’ turn to be caught on the outside and Church and Prunty raced by on the inside for third and fourth place. A lap later, Prunty made his way around Church for third using the high groove as Apel and Morgan enjoyed a comfortable margin out front. A half spin by Nick Wagner in turn two produced the first caution flag of the race on lap 36 with Apel leading Morgan, Prunty, DeAngelis, and Church. A lap after racing resumed the yellow flag waved again for a spin by Brian Holtz in turn two and the caution period proved to be beneficial to Morgan as he spun in between turns three and four but was allowed to maintain his position due to the caution flag already being displayed for Holtz’s incident. Apel chose the inside lane for the restart while Morgan picked the top groove and the choice proved to be detrimental to Morgan as he struggled a bit on the high side allowing Prunty and DeAngelis to race by. Morgan fell in line directly in front of Church in fourth and the two began to dispute the position while Prunty and DeAngelis tried to track down Apel in the lead. As Church and Morgan battled into turn one on lap 40, contact between Church’s right front corner and Morgan’s left rear corner sent Morgan’s car spinning off turn two as the yellow flag waved for a third time. Church and Morgan were sent to the rear of the field for their involvement in the incident as Tim Lampman and Dale Prunty moved into fourth and fifth respectively behind Apel, Dennis Prunty, and DeAngelis. Apel chose the inside lane for the restart and Dennis Prunty took to the high side and as the green flag appeared, Apel was able to maintain the lead while Prunty slid back in line behind him. The top five ran nose to tail for the next several laps with Dennis Prunty glued to Apel’s rear bumper just ahead of DeAngelis in third. After several massages to Apel’s rear bumper, Prunty delivered a slightly harder shot exiting turn four with four laps to go and moved alongside as Apel’s car skidded up a groove. The pair raced side by side for the next two laps with DeAngelis directly behind them in third before Prunty prevailed from the inside. Apel was able to get back in line ahead of DeAngelis to keep second and although he gave a strong effort, he could not catch the leader as Prunty drove under the checkered flag for the win. Apel finished a close second directly followed by DeAngelis in third while Dale Prunty crossed the finish line in fourth. Tim Lampman finished a solid fifth while Conrad Morgan rebounded from his earlier spin to finish sixth. James Swan finished in seventh and Chris Blawat was eighth. Rob Braun and Nick Wagner completed the top ten finishers.

Slinger— Dennis Prunty got the second chance to win the SuperSeal Slinger Nationals he feared he never would.
Perhaps Ty Majeski will someday, too.
Prunty dominated the 199-lap feature Tuesday night just as he had a year earlier, and he ended up standing in victory lane rather than alongside a stalled car in the pits. Doused in water and holding a freshly opened Miller Lite, Prunty thrust an oversized check in the air and then explained how he kept himself from thinking he might be disappointed again.
"Here's the deal," Prunty said. "I had that in the back of my head; I'm like, I just want to lead laps. Lead laps and if you lead the last one you win. If you don't lead the last one, there's still a lot of lap money, so I got to the front as I could and just tried to be smart about it."
With the $10,000 winner's share and about another $5,000 in money put up by individual sponsors for the leader, Prunty and his team went home with their biggest payday.
"It's not just the name on the wall, it's also the big check," said Prunty, the 2012 track champion. "I've always wanted to walk out of a racetrack with a big check.
"That thing's going in the backseat of the truck, and I'm going to haul it around for two weeks."
Prunty needed just nine laps to get to the front from his fifth starting position and gave up the lead only in side-by-side battles after restarts. Within 3½ laps of any of those he was gone again. Overall he led 189, including the final 128.
Majeski, a hotshot from Seymour quickly building a national reputation, came on late to become Prunty's biggest challenger. Majeski cut a 3-second lead to seven-tenths before they came upon lapped traffic and Prunty got through it more quickly.
Trapped behind a battle of lapped cars, Majeski hit Gary LaMonte and spun him with six laps to go. The yellow would have allowed him to pull alongside Prunty, but instead he was penalized and sent to the end of the lead lap.
"I was going for the win there," Majeski said as he stood stone-faced in front of his car in the pits, a group of fans keeping a respectful distance.
"I tried to get to the outside of the 63 in Turns 1 and 2. He never gave me a lane. I went down into 3 and 4, he parked it in the center and I wasn't expecting him to park it."
Elsewhere, Majeski said, he believed he'd have kept his position, "but that's the way it goes. It could be a lot worse. I could be sitting here with a wrecked race car, so we'll take P4 (fourth)."
With Majeski gone, 67-year-old Conrad Morgan was alongside Prunty for what should have been the final restart. It was aborted, though, when Morgan hit the kill switch while shifting. He was fortunate to avoid being run over and got another chance.
He finished second, and two-time defending track champion Steve Apel was third.
"I played it the whole night," said Morgan, the seven-time track champion who won the Nationals in 1999. "I didn't want to burn the car up, I didn't want to burn the brakes up, I didn't want to burn the tires up. I didn't want to wear myself out.
"With about 10 laps to go I had the opportunity. I tried. But Dennis just had a really good car. He's been good all year."
Ross Kenseth's best chance to win the Nationals evaporated in 11 laps. The 22-year-old son of six-time Nationals winner and NASCAR champion Matt Kenseth dropped out with a failure in the rear end of the car of Prunty's he drove.
"I'm still bummed about Ross," Prunty said in victory lane. "I gave him a really good car, and something broke. I'm just glad I wasn't in that car this year. I was going to drive that one."
Others out of contention or out completely before halfway included NASCAR Camping World Truck Series frontrunner Johnny Sauter, making a rare Nationals appearance, and John DeAngelis, a two-time feature winner already this season. Both had suspension problems.
Rich Bickle, who won the his fourth Nationals in 2013 and then took last year off, dropped out after he and five-time champ Lowell Bennett tangled early.

Ross Kenseth hoping to outrun Dennis Prunty at Slinger Nationals

Slinger — Maybe Ross Kenseth got the wrong impression when Dennis Prunty offered him a car to race in the Slinger Nationals.
"He's been real fast the last couple of years and has won a lot of races, so there's a good a chance as any to get that done," the son of NASCAR champion and six-time Nationals winner Matt Kenseth said recently.
"And it never hurts to be running one of Dennis' cars because I know if I'm leading he won't wreck me."
Maybe. Maybe not.
Prunty clarified his position on team orders Monday, on the eve of the 36th running of the biggest event of the year at Slinger Speedway.
"It's whoever wins, wins," Prunty said, "and if I've got to hit him, I'll hit him and I'm sure he's going to do the same to me. I've just got to talk to him about how we're going to fix my car if he wrecks it. We haven't talked about that yet.
"We're both here to win. I have no reason to finish second, and I think he feels the same. This is a win-or-nothing race."
The 199-lap feature will pay more than $10,000 to the winner. Qualifying is set for 4 p.m. and the feature shortly after 8 p.m.
Prunty was in a playful mood after he and Kenseth parked their black Nos. 22 and 42 cars, respectively, after a short practice session that left both of them pleased. But the 42-year-old, a champion at Slinger and at the Dells Motor Speedway, has shown when his window net goes up, he won't be pushed around. 
Plus, last year still hurts.
Prunty had the race in control with the white flag in sight when a fried ignition wire shut down his car just as quickly as if he'd have flipped the switch. Each time Prunty has led since, he has wondered what might go wrong.
"It bothers me that it happened, having a car so good," Prunty said. "To me, I might only get that one chance (in the Nationals). Hopefully we get another chance at it this time and everything goes good."
If Prunty doesn't get it done as a driver, he still has a shot for the victory as Kenseth's car owner. Prunty has won a season-best four features at Slinger, including three of the past four. In two outings in the car Kenseth will drive, Prunty finished first and third.
The two struck up friendship in 2009 while pitting side by side at the Snowball Derby in Pensacola, Fla. — "I think we fed him that year," Prunty said — and they have raced against each other and worked together numerous times.
"I think he was joking around with me when he brought it up to me last year and he said, 'Hey, if you want to run my car sometime, let me know.' And I took him up on the offer," Kenseth said. "I wanted to get Slinger on my schedule early. I wanted to have a good shot at winning. That's one race I do put a lot of effort into for the last, gosh, six years now."
Kenseth has a top finish of third in the event.
The 22-year-old said his confidence on the track has been boosted by a victory in the ARCA series at Michigan International Speedway and a sixth place in his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut at Chicagoland Speedway last month. Those runs also have helped in Kenseth's quest for a regular NASCAR ride.
"On paper, you kind of get rid of the speculation," he said. "You've got something to show, rather than saying, 'Oh, no, I'll get the job done for you.'
"It just comes down to finding the money to put it all together. It's the time of year now that I've kind of got ahead of the game in starting to talk about next year for something full time or even a handful of races to go do because I'm ready to get back in the seat again."
Ideally without having to rebuild Prunty's car first.

July 5, 2015 Slinger Story & photos

Slinger, Wis., July 5—Battling to regain the lead with four laps to go, Dennis Prunty edged Steve Apel to capture his fourth super late model feature victory of the season in the second round of the Pepsi Challenge Series Sunday night at the Slinger Super Speedway.
Prunty and Matt Kocourek occupied the front row as the race began and Prunty quickly established himself as the leader from the inside lane, bringing along John DeAngelis with him and into second place which left Kocourek to battle with Conrad Morgan and Steve Apel for third. Kocourek struggled on the high side early and he began to fade as first Apel and Morgan and then later Brad Mueller and Michael Bilderback all drove by for position. With Dennis Prunty enjoying a sizeable lead, Apel tracked down DeAngelis and used an outside pass on lap 16 to take over second while Morgan, Bilderback, and Mueller staged a three-way battle over the third position. Bilderback and Morgan were both able to work to the inside of Mueller to nail down third and fourth place respectively while farther ahead Apel closed to Prunty’s rear bumper for the lead. A half spin in turn one by Gary LaMonte while racing for position in heavy traffic produced the first and only caution flag of the event on lap 31.

Prunty chose the outside lane for the restart but it was Apel who was on the button as racing resumed and he charged to the lead from the inside groove. Prunty had to fend off an inside challenge from DeAngelis to keep possession of second place while Bilderback quickly dove to the inside lane to defend fourth place from Mueller and Morgan. With Apel continuing to show the way over Prunty, Morgan made his move as he worked his way around both Mueller and Bilderback and a few laps later, Dale Prunty had his car working on the inside lane and he too passed Mueller and Bilderback to take over fifth. Dennis Prunty began to gradually close the distance between himself and Apel for the lead as the laps wound down while Morgan and Dale Prunty closed in on DeAngelis to challenge for third. With five laps to go, Dennis Prunty was on Apel’s tail as Apel’s car began to kick loose off the turns and with four circuits left, Prunty made his move, making in inside pass for the lead. Apel tried to battle back but his loose condition off the turns negated and hopes of retaking the point as Prunty drove to his fourth feature win of the season. John DeAngelis held off Conrad Morgan for third while Dale Prunty rounded out the top five finishers in fifth. Brad Mueller finished in the sixth position followed by Brian Johnson Jr. in seventh and Gary LaMonte in eighth. Michael Bilderback and Chris Blawat finished ninth and tenth respectively.
